Before we can jump into the nitty gritty of the Pomodoro Technique, you first need to understand why it’s necessary in the first place.

In an age where information lies just one Google Search away, where instant gratification is to be expected, people are having a harder time focusing on what matters. In other words, you’re easily distracted.

Distraction is a problem. Now, there are ways to combat this…

These are all great ways to help you get more of the right stuff done. But if you are constantly distracted, you won’t even recognize that you are being ineffective with your time.

The Pomodoro Technique sets out to solve this problem. To help you regain focus on what matters and to get you working. It’s about recognizing what needs to get done and being laser focused in your pursuit of it.

 

How to get laser focused

In the section above I mentioned distractions. It’s not that you need to rule them out of your life completely. Distraction is great from time to time and you definitely need breaks.

The problem is when distraction starts calling the shots. You don’t want that. You want to create your ideal life, not be stuck doing the same unproductive things over and over again.

So before you even start using the Pomodoro Technique, you first need to recognize what needs to get done. In other words, what are you working towards?

Once you can answer this question for yourself, you’ll find that your focus sharpens and you’ll have a better idea of what needs to get done.

 

Where are you heading?

So take a few moments to consider where you are today and where you want to be in the future. Think about what you are doing, who you are with, and who you want to become.

With that in mind, take a few more moments and consider the steps that you can use to help you get there.

For example, if your big picture goal is to start a business, what does the best case scenario of the business look like? Is it making a certain amount of money? Is it granting you a certain amount of time? Whatever it is, have that vision in your mind.

Then with that vision, think about what you need to do to get there. Do you need a certain amount of sales each month, a certain audience size, a particular staff choice? Think about the steps that you can do today that will lead you towards your goals.

That’s what you should be focusing on – whatever the steps are that will take you from where you are today to your ideal life tomorrow.

It doesn’t have to be a business; it could be traveling the world, losing/gaining a certain amount of weight, having the time to spend with your family. It’s whatever fills you up with excitement and hope!

So spend some time thinking this over. Once you have a vision in mind with some steps to get you there, then you can start applying the Pomodoro Technique to your life effectively.

If you neglect that step though, you run the risk of working on things each day that are unimportant.

It’s very easy to waste a day running errands that could be done some other time. But there’s nothing like knowing that you used your 24 hours working on something that will help you create an amazing life for yourself!

Now let’s dig into the actual steps of the Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique is a simple time management system that is getting rave reviews. It’s especially effective when you have larger chunks of time to work on something, but like I always say – some is better than none. Meaning that working on your goals, if only for a short while, is better than not working on them at all. 

So here is a breakdown of the Pomodoro Technique:

  1. Choose the task that you will be working on.
  2. Set a timer for 25 minutes.
  3. Work on that one task for the duration of the 25 minutes. Shut out all distractions. Put all of your focus onto that one task.
  4. When the timer is up, take a short break (around 5 minutes). If you’d like to monitor your progress, you can also place a check mark on a piece of paper to signify that you completed one Pomodoro round.
  5. When the break is done, set the timer for 25 minutes again and get back to it.
  6. Repeat as needed.
  7. After 4 Pomodoro rounds, take a longer break of around 20-30 minutes to give yourself some time to relax.

Pretty straightforward, right? It’s a simple tactic, but it’s actually very effective in reining in your attention so that you can focus on what matters.

Oh and one last bit of trivia. You may be wondering where the term Pomodoro Technique actually came from. Well, it was originally created by Francesco Cirillo when he was a university student. At the time, he was using a tomato-shaped timer to get work done. He named his technique “Pomodoro ” after the shape of that timer.
