You’re tired, bored, uninspired. Maybe your boss gave you some task that makes you want to rip out your hair. Or maybe you’ve been enjoying the couch more than the elliptical lately. Either way, you’re stuck and are looking for a few tips to help you get motivated.
I’m here to help.
Because I know all too well what it feels like to lose your steam. It’s the worst.
It’s especially terrible because of the guilt. Because of that voice in the back of your head that says, “You know, you really should be working on that project right now instead of playing on Snapchat.”
I hate that voice. But guess what? He’s right. And your voice is probably right too.
Get Motivated! How To Be Productive When You Don’t Want To
I love working on QuickBooost (the site you’re on right now). I love helping people do more with their time and I love the process of writing and sharing what I know.
It’s really rewarding.
But I’m not going to lie, there are periods of time when I feel completely stuck. It could be from writing posts for too many days in a row, or it could be that I’ve been spending a lot of time on a new course launch and am feeling exhausted.
Whatever the reason, there are definitely times where my motivation to crawl out of bed at six in the morning to work on this passion project, all before starting my day job hours later, feels downright impossible.
I’m burnt out. I’ve lost my motivation. Oh no.
I’ve felt this way before though. And not just with QuickBooost; with other things I care about as well. Chances are that I’ll feel this way again too. It’s part of my wiring. So when I’m feeling exhausted, I know not to panic.
Because this lack of motivation isn’t because I’ve “fallen out of love” with QuickBooost. Quite the contrary. It’s actually that, similar to training for a half marathon, my mind and body just need rest every once and awhile.
So when I’m feeling stuck with QuickBooost, feeling like my motivation is gone and that I’m completely exhausted, I know one thing:
I need to rest.
And rest is exactly what I do.
For a whole week. Seven days.
I don’t just take my foot off the gas, I straight up put the car in the garage and refuse to drive it.
And for those seven days, I use the time that I would normally be spending on QuickBooost to instead rest, reflect, and do some introspection. To think of the things I’m grateful for and remind myself why I love doing QuickBooost in the first place.
I force myself to rest… even when I don’t want to because I know how good it is for me.
Book after book
And you know what? At the end of those seven days, I’m back to feeling energized and excited, PLUS I usually have one or two new ideas for QuickBooost that I wouldn’t have come up with had I continued with my daily grind.
Rest for me is necessary.
And whether it’s for QuickBooost, training for a half marathon, or reading book after book, I know that rest is a key component to maintaining my motivation levels over time.
It works for me.
With that in mind, use this post to help you understand what you need to get motivated. Go through the following strategies to determine what you need to be your most motivated self.
Get motivated – Rest up
As I touched on earlier, rest is important. It may seem counterintuitive but if you’re wondering how to get motivated, one of the best places to start is by getting rest.
Because when you’re well rested you can better concentrate and be effective with your time. You go from groggy and unfocused to knowing what you need to get done and in what order.
Rest, in this case, is really anything that gives you a break from your regular grind. That could be:
- Taking a nap
- Putting a brief pause on a project
- Or skipping a day at the gym
Referencing my example from earlier, when I need a break from QuickBooost I’ll take a week off for rest. If it’s workout related, maybe I’ll just take the day. Or if it’s a certain project for my job, I’ll put it on hold for the afternoon.
Every facet of my life is different and so are the amounts of time that I need for rest.
You’ll need to determine what amount of time is right for you.
Either way, if you’re feeling tired, unmotivated, or lethargic, it may just be your body telling you to take it easy. To catch up on some rest so that you can tackle the next day with energy and effectiveness. It all comes down to managing that work life balance.
Plus, stepping away for a little while often allows you to return to the problem with a fresh, and usually better, perspective.
Commit to sleep
Speaking of rest, if you want to get motivated sleep needs to be at the top of your list.
For a long time I operated on insufficient sleep. I thought I was an outlier – someone that could work without shut eye. But what I thought was productive time well-spent was usually time spent trying to keep my eyelids open.
It wasn’t until I finally started prioritizing sleep that I began to see the change I was after.
That’s a big deal!
Sleep is a necessity but we often think we can get by without it. Instead, make it a priority. Make time for it in your schedule just like you would anything else. Adjust your morning routine so that you give yourself more time for sleep the night before.

Get motivated – Set deadlines
Whether you’re wondering how to get motivated to work or are trying to get motivated to hit the gym, setting deadlines for yourself is the way to go.
It’s something I highlight in my goal setting course and is something I’ll reiterate here. Deadlines are powerful!
When you have a deadline you need to meet, people go out of their way to get it done in time. It’s basic Parkinson’s Law in action and your motivation struggles can work in the same way. Here’s how:
If you have work to do but don’t want to do it, set a realistic deadline for yourself to do it by.
Because often just the act of drawing that line in the sand will give you the push you need to get up and get after it.
If you find that works well for you, you can also consider setting some sub-deadlines.
Meaning that if a project is too daunting to work on in one sitting, set smaller checkpoints that you can complete along the way. That way, you can see your progress and have built-in pause points as you go.
You know what pairs nicely with meeting a deadline? A reward! It’s a great way to get motivated as you go through and complete your tasks.
In this case the reward could be a:
- Snack you’ve been looking forward to
- Few minutes of a show you’ve been waiting to watch
- Or really anything that brings you joy
By combining deadlines with rewards and rest, you’re creating a recipe that will lift you out of your motivational slump.

Get motivated – Evaluate your time
Want some help to get motivated? Remember this: time is finite. You only have so much in a day and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
So don’t waste it! Instead, evaluate it.
Find out where you spend your time and if it doesn’t align with your goals then make a change. Use time to your advantage.
Then once you understand how valuable your time is you can create a plan for it. A plan that allows you to work on the things that matter and ignore the things that don’t.
There are numerous things constantly pulling at your attention – notifications, emails, calls, texts, you name it.
Those distractions can easily rob you of your energy and leave you feeling tired and unmotivated. So prevent fatigue by taking an unplugged break.
This is one of the best ways to get motivated because it forces you to focus and get things done. It requires you to stop distracting yourself with flashing screens, buckle down, and work on what’s important.
So put your phone on airplane mode, close out your email, and focus in on the task at hand. Learn how to stay focused and your concentration will improve along with your motivation.
Get motivated – Make time for self care
One of my favorite ways to get motivated, especially when I’m in a bit of a slump, is to practice self care. Similar to rest, self care is all about taking care of yourself.
In order words, doing something for yourself that allows you to step back, unwind, and recharge.
That could be a:
- Spa day
- Nourishing meal
- Hang out with friends
- Or moment of meditation
By making time for self care you will be able to regain clarity and calm. In turn giving you more energy, motivation, and determination to tackle whatever problems come your way.
If you want to have a productive day, you need to make sure that you’re taken care of first.
Create a to-do list
One of the best productivity hacks and ways to get motivated is through the creation of a to-do list.
There are a lot of different ways to create lists though. Some are more effective than others. But at the end of the day, the best list is the one that gets you moving. Any list is better than no list.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or discouraged, writing everything down is a great way to clear your head, think things through, and create steps to move forward.
I am constantly making new lists. Doing so helps me:
- Get organized
- Increase focus
- And jumpstart my motivation
So as you create your own list, be sure to evaluate your time. Keep the things that are necessary and remove the ones that don’t serve a purpose.
Try starting with your hardest tasks first and then allow the confidence you feel from completing those challenging tasks to push you forward throughout the rest of the list.
Get motivated – Listen to something inspiring
One great way to get motivated is to listen to something inspirational.
Whether it’s a podcast, motivational talk show, audiobook, or inspirational TED Talk, listening to something inspiring will help provide the jolt you need to get up and get after it.
Podcasts are always the go-to for myself. They normally aren’t too long in duration and give me the motivation I need to get back to it.
Remember, it’s all about creating a system that works for you.

Don’t sweat the small stuff
One flaw that many of us share is caring too much about what others think. So recognize that the advice and opinions from others can be helpful, but the only voice that should dictate what you do is your own.
- Are people saying that you can’t travel the world?
- Or start that business?
- Or have it all?
Prove them wrong.
Don’t let others prevent you from achieving your goals. That negativity will only result in decreased motivation and fulfillment.
Instead, get motivated and get after it!
Embrace the challenge and watch as your energy, productivity, and motivation increase like never before.

Get motivated moving forward
